HoyLunes – There are pieces of music that do not need to ask permission to enter.

They arrive wrapped in a familiar melody, a recognizable joy, and that warmth capable of awakening a memory or drawing an instant smile on anyone listening for the first time.

Cartagenera, by Noro Vanella, belongs to that very singular territory.

In Francisco Álvarez’s interpretation, the piece acquires a special intimacy. The piano retains its festive spirit while bringing to light the most delicate nuances of a composition designed to accompany the sea, the breeze, and those moments where people of different origins converge in the same pulse.

Perhaps that is why this music has struck such a deep chord in Spain, South America, and, in a very special way, in the heart of the Costa del Sol. There is no need to trace its origin to be carried away by its rhythm; it is enough to surrender to listening. For a few minutes, these notes achieve what today seems like a small feat: pausing the clock, silencing the external noise, and reminding us of the value of inhabiting the present.

Below, Francisco Álvarez personally reflects on the magic of this work and what it means to bring its vitality to every corner of the audience.

What is it about Noro Vanella’s «Cartagenera» that has allowed this music to remain so cherished?

I believe its charm lies in the combination of a easily remembered melody and a rhythm that invites enjoyment and sharing. It possesses joy and warmth. It can awaken memories in those who know it and win over those who listen to it for the first time. In an environment like the Costa del Sol, that vitality finds a very special framework—between the sea, the light, and the gathering of people from different cultures.

If the performance awakens a fond memory or a smile in the listener, I feel that the music has fully fulfilled its purpose.

La puesta de sol sobre Puerto Sotogrande acompaña visualmente una música que habla de mar, luz, memoria y encuentro.
The sunset over Puerto Sotogrande visually accompanies music that speaks of the sea, light, memory, and connection.

What does completing this piece represent to you, and what would you like to convey to the audience?

For me, it represents the pleasure of sharing music that reaches people directly. When bringing it to the piano, I try to preserve its character and joy, while also finding the most delicate nuances of the melody. I like to convey closeness and well-being; so that whoever listens to it can pause for a few minutes, let themselves be accompanied by the music, and enjoy the moment. If it awakens a fond memory or a smile, I feel that the performance has fulfilled its purpose.

Cartagenera in the hands of Francisco Álvarez proves to us that truly enduring art requires no artifice, only authenticity. Between the sea of the Costa del Sol and the echo of its keys, the music becomes a shared refuge, a luminous reminder that the simplest melodies are often those that manage to unite us forever.
